From the late 1990s until today, China's sound practice has been developing in an increasingly globalized socio-political-aesthetic milieu, receiving attentions and investments from the art world, music industry and cultural institutes, with nevertheless, its unique acoustic philosophy remaining silent. This book traces the history of sound practice from contemporary Chinese visual art back in the 1980s, to electronic music, which was introduced as a target of critique in the 1950s, to electronic instrument building fever in the late 1970s and early 1980s, and to the origins of both academic and nonacademic electronic and experimental music activities. This expansive tracing of sound in the arts resonates with another goal of this book, to understand sound and its artistic practice through notions informed by Chinese qi-cosmology and qi-philosophy, including notions of resonance, shanshui (mountains-waters), huanghu (elusiveness and evasiveness), and distributed monumentality and anti-monumentality. By turning back to deep history to learn about the meaning and function of sound and listening in ancient China, the book offers a refreshing understanding of the British sinologist Joseph Needham's statement that "Chinese acoustics is acoustics of qi." and expands existing conceptualization of sound art and contemporary music at large.

This book is a journey - a ride through the depths of Germany's modern musical roots: At the beginning of the 1970s, experimental and progressive music in Germany developed far from the mainstream. Although few initially noticed it, it is now internationally celebrated as a cult phenomenon called "Krautrock". Today, bands like Kraftwerk, Can, Amon Düül II, NEU!, Cluster, and Tangerine Dream are considered pioneers of groundbreaking sound experiments. In order to understand the Krautrock era and its impact, it's worth delving deeper into the history of German rock music and taking a closer look at the overall picture. Times & Sounds offers a comprehensive insight into the mechanisms of post-war Germany's music industry and sheds light upon its diverse musical styles, as well as their mutual influences and connections, which have received little attention until now: From the onset of German Jazz and Swing orchestras to the first Rock ,n' Roll bands around Hamburg's Star Club and electronic synthesizer pioneers. From the intact world of Schlager to agitprop and left-wing protest songs. From the avant-garde compositions of Stockhausen and his presumed disciples of Krautrock to the Neue Deutsche Welle. This book is a journalistic diary tracing Germany's dynamic culture from the late 40s to the early 90s. Those who take this journey experience the ups and downs of five decades, thus developing an understanding deeper than any other of the Krautrock phenomenon. "For experts, as well as newbies, in the krautrock field, this book does not only open up several new views for the first time, it presents a general overview of the big picture of rock music in Germany." Hans-Joachim Roedelius (Kluster/Cluster/Harmonia) "Finally, the whole story at a glance! Excellent!" Hellmut Hattler (Kraan/Tab Two)

Nathan Fake (Border Community, Traum, SAW) kommt süss psychedelisch. Koze überrascht mit einer extrem tanzbaren Version von Michael Smiths Mi Cyaan Believe ItnnNathan Fake (Border Community, Traum, SAW) kommt süss psychedelisch. Koze überrascht mit einer extremt tanzbaren Version von Michael Smiths Mi Cyaan Believe It I keep asking myself where they take all that brilliant music from. It's just as if somebody had poked a bees' nest and then it all burst out. I feel deeply connected to the Pampa Style... (Terry Hogann, The Musical Mistress, 10/2010). As was to be expected, Pampa is steadily developing into a platform for cross-border electronic dance music. Each Pampa release sounds different from the previous and still Pampa remains a conclusive musical planet. This is all the more surprising in the case of PAMPA005, which features two completely different artists: Side A: Nathan Fake - Xmas Rush Having reportedly recorded his track Xmas Rush in his London studio during a jam session, Nathan Fake (Border Community, Traum, SAW) has turned in a total brainfuck. It's mercylessly exaggerated, psychedelic, inexorable, and at the same time sweet and heart-warming. A very rare mixture. Unique in its consistency, we haven't heard anything like it since the 90s. It's so nice and overwhelming to have your ears exercised the right way again. Evergreen... Side AA: DJ Koze pays tribute to Michael Smith - Mi Cyaan believe it In the meantime, DJ Koze has moved on to completely different spheres. Once again, he astonishes his public with an extremely danceable version of Michael Smith's Mi Cyaan Believe It. Having originally started off as a digital error, and recorded within a single night, this tune recalls the ruthlessness, rawness and revolutionary energy of Public Enemy. You can literally see SW1 deploying on the balcony of Amnesia, shitting down diarrhea. The rough and dry beat sets the perfect scenery for the breath-taking lyrics by Michael Smith, the great dub poet, who was tragically beaten to death by political opponents in Jamaica in 1983 (the incident sadly occurred on Marcus Garvey's birthday), alongside Linton Kwesi Johnson, and Mutabaruka, who was one of the most well-known dub poets. Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online. Vinnie Bell (born Vincent Gambella, 1935, New York) is a leading American session guitarist and pioneer of electronic effects in pop music. He played in nightclubs in New York City in the late 1950s. By 1962, Bell decided to devote his energies to working as a studio musician both in New York and Los Angeles, California, developing a "watery" guitar sound popular in instrumental recordings in the 1960s. Although he only recorded occasionally under his own name, Bell left an indelible mark on hundreds of hit pop recordings. Vinnie played on Frank Sinatra's "New York, New York", for one. He also invented a number of electric guitar models, including the first electric 12-string guitar, and the electric sitar, using it on such hits as "Green Tambourine" by The Lemon Pipers, "Band of Gold" by Freda Payne, and the main theme from the 1970 film, Airport. The latter sold over one million copies, and was awarded a gold disc.
