Waxwork Records is proud to present SORCERER Original Motion Picture Soundtrack by Tangerine Dream. Directed by William Friedkin (The Exorcist, Cruising) and starring Roy Scheider, Sorcerer is a 1977 intense, existential thriller that follows four outcasts from varied backgrounds that meet in a South American village. They are then assigned to transport cargos of aged, poorly kept dynamite that is so unstable that it is sweating its dangerous basic ingredient, nitroglycerin. The mounting expense to make the film required the involvement of two major studios, and production was troubled with its various filming locations in multiple countries, often times within dangerous rainforests and raging rivers. Sorcerer was a commercial failure and this has long been attributed to the George Lucas’s Star Wars which was released one month earlier, instantly becoming a pop-culture phenomenon and forever changing how Hollywood movies were made. Sorcerer has enjoyed a critical re-evaluation and is now widely considered to be a cinematic masterpiece. The film’s music by German Krautrock and electronic group Tangerine Dream features the band’s first film score. Before the explosion of electronic and synthesizer based film scoring prevalent in the 1980’s in movies such as Blade Runner and The Terminator, and before the explosive modern day interest and revival of successful synth-scored TV series’ and movies such as Stranger Things and Drive, the music to Sorcerer by Tangerine Dream is a wildly influential blueprint and example of how movie scoring could be approached. Director William Friedkin instinctively sensed this during a chance encounter while witnessing a secret Tangerine Dream concert deep within the German Black Forest in an abandoned Church in the mid 1970’s. The 1975 will release their highly-anticipated second album I like it when you sleep, for you are so beautiful yet so unaware of it on 26 February through Dirty Hit/Polydor. I like it when you sleep… is the follow-up to the quartet’s million-selling self-titled debut. It is a bold and brilliant record made up of infectious pop hooks and sprawling electro sonics, an ambitious stride forward for one of the UK’s most exciting young bands. It will be preceded by the gospel-tinged The Sound, which follows the hysterically-received Love Me and UGH!. “In 2016, everything has been done,” says frontman Matty Healy. “You just have to try and do it better. My generation consumes music in this completely non-linear way and we reflect that, we create how we consume.” The 1975 have had the sort of breakthrough that only happens once a decade. Healy, Adam Hann (guitar), Ross MacDonald (bass) and George Daniel (drums) formed at school on the outskirts of Manchester ten years ago. After years of honing their sound, 2013’s debut album revealed a band who could blend accessible and anthemic choruses with an artistic aesthetic. It was a record where indie-pop grooves and alt R&B atmospherics sat seamlessly next to each other. A mass audience connected with indelible tracks such as Chocolate, Girls, Sex and Robbers and their tales of adolescent recklessness. The group toured the world, playing sold-out shows from Kuala Lumpur to San Francisco. All these experiences feed into the band’s second album which was recorded in Los Angeles and produced by Healy and Daniel alongside production collaborator Mike Crossey. It distils their love of 80s sonics into something that sounds impossibly now, a record that shifts between shimmying guitar grooves (She’s American, Love Me), experimental electronic soundscapes (I like it when you sleep…, Please Be Naked) and cascading, adventurous pop songs (If I Believe You, Lostmyhead, The Sound) whilst always sounding part of the same whole. “Why create one type of music when nobody consumes one type of music?” says Healy. “The idea of rules in art is completely farcical.” The 1975 have made a record that captures the exhilarating feeling of falling in love and the devastation of breaking-up and all the fun and drama in between. They have a cherished mix of unlimited ambition and the rarefied talent to back it up. “We’re like brothers, we really are. We don’t know anyone who is as close with their siblings as we are we each other because from age 13 to now we’ve been in the same room together,” says Healy. This spirit is at the heart of their glorious second album. It will be one of the most important releases of 2016. The 1975 have set a benchmark that will be hard to follow.

One hundred years after Luigi Russolos The Art of Noises, this book exposes a cross-section of the current motivations, activities, thoughts, and reflections of composers, performers, and artists who work with noise in all of its many forms. The books focus is the practice of noise and its relationship to music, and in particular the role of noise as musical material -- as form, as sound, as notation or interface, as a medium for listening, as provocation, as data. Its contributors are first and foremost practitioners, which inevitably turns attention toward how and why noise is made and its potential role in listening and perceiving. Contributors include Peter Ablinger, Sebastian Berweck, Aaron Cassidy, Marko Ciciliani, Nick Collins, Aaron Einbond, Matthias Haenisch, Alec Hall, Martin Iddon, Bryan Jacobs, Phil Julian, Michael Maierhof, Joan Arnau Pámies, and James Whitehead (JLIAT). The book also features a collection of short responses to a two-question interview -- what is noise (music) to you? and why do you make it? -- by some of the leading musicians working with noise today. Their work spans a wide range of artistic practice, including instrumental, vocal, and electronic music; improvisation; notated composition; theater; sound installation; DIY; and software development. Interview subjects include Eryck Abecassis, Franck Bedrossian, Antoine Chessex, Ryan Jordan, Alice Kemp (Germseed), George Lewis, Lasse Marhaug, Maja Solveig Kjelstrup Ratkje, Diemo Schwarz, Ben Thigpen, Kasper Toeplitz, and Pierre Alexandre Tremblay.
