Modern Music and After (eBook, PDF)

Over three decades, Paul Griffiths's survey has remained the definitive study of music since the Second World War; this fully revised and updated edition re-establishes Modern Music and After as the preeminent introduction to the music of our time. The disruptions of the war, and the struggles of the ensuing peace, were reflected in the music of the time: in Pierre Boulez's radical reformation of compositional technique and in John Cage's development of zen music; in Milton Babbitt's settling of the serial system and in Dmitry Shostakovich's unsettling symphonies; in Karlheinz Stockhausen's development of electronic music and in Luigi Nono's pursuit of the universally human, in Iannis Xenakis's view of music as sounding mathematics and in Luciano Berio's consideration of it as language. The initiatives of these composers and their contemporaries opened prospects that haven't yet stopped unfolding. This constant expansion of musical thinking since 1945 has left us with no singular history of music; Griffiths's study accordingly follows several different paths, showing how and why they converge and diverge. This new edition of Modern Music and After discusses not only the music of the fifteen years that have passed since the previous edition, but also the recent explosion of scholarly interest in the latter half of the twentieth century. In particular, the book has been expanded to incorporate the variety of responses to the modernist impasse experienced by composers of the 1980s and 1990s. Griffiths then moves the book into the twenty-first century as he examines such highly influential composers as Helmut Lachenmann and Salvatore Sciarrino. For its breadth, wealth of detail, and characteristic wit and clarity, the third edition of Modern Music and After is required reading for the student and the enquiring listener.

This story has to have a happy ending... Every weekend, the tech rich of Silicon Valley and Los Angeles, find themselves intermingling with hippies, spiritual advisers, artists, and shamans in prehistoric lake beds and dilapidated warehouses while they listen to electronic dance music and do copious amounts of drugs. The richest people in the history of mankind are being transformed by this movement. The transformational music festivals are changing the people who change the world...but will it be a world we'll want to live in? What starts off as a cynical take on people who are "trying to find meaning where there is none," turns into an adventure that spans six months across all the major music festivals of the West Coast, ending at, the holy of holy places for the transformations, Burning Man. Life in the Festivals is an honest look at this emerging world. Whether you agree with these people or not, you cannot deny their importance. This movement may just be the most interesting thing happening in the world. Sometimes cynical and witty, other times humble and eye opening, Life in the Festivals is a must hear for anyone who is curious about this strange culture and events. As well as anyone who plans on attending Burning Man, Lightning in a Bottle, EDC or any of the other music festivals sprouting out of the West Coast of America. This cannot be life, but life can sometimes be this. 1. Language: English. Narrator: John Michael Thomas. Audio sample: http://samples.audible.de/bk/acx0/042557/bk_acx0_042557_sample.mp3. Skillfully read by DJ, MTV News reporter, and radio host Sway Calloway, whose effortless style and distinct voice perfectly capture John's message, and featuring a customized introduction from the author himself, this audiobook is the go-to source for all those wanting to learn the importance of staying hungry in order to succeed. Interspersed throughout its chapters, listeners are treated to "Power Facts" and "Shark Points" told directly by Daymond John, giving the famed entrepreneur and branding expert a chance to impart some of his invaluable wisdom. Daymond John has been practicing the power of broke ever since he started selling his home-sewn T-shirts on the streets of Queens. With no funding and a $40 budget, Daymond had to come up with out-of-the box ways to promote his products. Luckily, desperation breeds innovation, and so he hatched an idea for a creative campaign that eventually launched the FUBU brand into a $6 billion global phenomenon. But it might not have happened if he hadn't started out broke - with nothing but a heart full of hope and a ferocious drive to succeed by any means possible.  Here, the FUBU founder and star of ABC's Shark Tank shows that, far from being a liability, broke can actually be your greatest competitive advantage as an entrepreneur. Why? Because starting a business from broke forces you to think more creatively. It forces you to use your resources more efficiently. It forces you to connect with your customers more authentically and market your ideas more imaginatively. It forces you to be true to yourself, stay laser focused on your goals, and come up with those innovative solutions required to make a meaningful mark. John shows how we can all leverage the power of broke to phenomenal success. You'll meet:  Steve Aoki, the electronic dance music (EDM) deejay who managed to parlay a series of $100 gigs into becoming a global superstar who has redefined the music industry.  Gig 1. George W. Truett (May 6, 1867 - July 7, 1944) was an American clergyman who was the pastor of the First Baptist Church of Dallas, TX, from 1897 until 1944, and the president of the Southern Baptist Convention from 1927 to 1929. He became one of the most famous Southern Baptist preachers and writers of his era. William Ashley "Billy" Sunday (November 19, 1862 - November 6, 1935) was a popular outfielder in baseball's National League from 1883 to 1890, who later became the most celebrated and influential American evangelist during the first two decades of the 20th century. Known for his colloquial sermons and frenetic delivery, Sunday held campaigns in America's largest cities and attracted the largest crowds of any evangelist before the advent of electronic sound systems. In addition, Sunday was a strong supporter of Prohibition, and his preaching likely played a role in the adoption of the 18th Amendment in 1919. Charles McCallon Alexander (1867-1920), a native of Tennessee, studied at Maryville University and eventually became a professor of music. After attending the Moody Bible Institute from 1892 to 1894, he became a popular gospel singer who toured with RA Torry and, later, John W. Chapman to launch the "Chapman-Alexander Simultaneous Campaign". 1. Language: English. Narrator: Billy Sunday, George W. Truett, Charles M. Alexander.
