Two events in music history had revolutionary consequences: the creation of notation and the invention of electronic sound. The initial stages of electronicmusic brought about new musical instruments like the theremin, the electric guitar and the synthesizer. In the digital age, the computer has itself become a musical instrument, with the invention of live electronics providing traditional instruments, such as the violin or piano, with new, unimagined sonic possibilities. The SWR Experimentalstudio in Freiburg, Germany, has been a primary catalyst in the development of live-electronic music, enabling influential composers such as Karlheinz Stockhausen, Pierre Boulez, John Cage, Luigi Nono, Mark Andre, Georg Friedrich Haas and Chaya Czernowin to create milestones of music history. Today, almost 50 years after its founding, the SWR Experimentalstudio remains a world leader in music technology research and contemporary music creation.

Karlheinz Stockhausen (22 August 1928 5 December 2007) was a German composer, widely acknowledged by critics as one of the most important (Barrett 1988, 45, Harvey 1975b, 705, Hopkins 1972, 33, Klein 1968, 117) but also controversial (Power 1990, 30) composers of the twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. Another critic calls him "one of the great visionaries of 20th-century music" (Hewett 2007). He is known for his ground-breaking work in electronic music, aleatory (controlled chance) in serial composition, and musical spatialization. He was educated at the Hochschule für Musik Köln and the University of Cologne, and later studied with Olivier Messiaen in Paris, and with Werner Meyer-Eppler at the University of Bonn. One of the leading figures of the Darmstadt School, his compositions and theories were and remain widely influential, not only on composers of art music, but also on jazz and popular-music artists. His works, composed over a period of nearly sixty years, eschew traditional forms.

Process Music

High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Process music is music that arises from a process, and more specifically, music that makes that process audible. Although today often used synonymously with minimalism, the term predates the appearance of this style by at least twenty years. Elliott Carter, for example, used the word "process" to describe the complex compositional shapes he began using around 1944 (Edwards 1971, 90 91, Brandt 1974, 27 28), with works like the Piano Sonata and First String Quartet, and continues to use down to the present time. Michael Nyman has stated that "the origins of this minimal process music lie in serialism" (Nyman 1974, 119). Kyle Gann (1987) also sees many similarities between serialism and minimalism, and Herman Sabbe (1977, 68 73) has demonstrated how process music functions in the early serial works of the Belgian composer Karel Goeyvaerts, especially in his electronic compositions Nr. 4, met dode tonen (1952) and Nr. 5, met zuivere tonen (1953). Elsewhere, Sabbe (1981, 18 21) makes a similar demonstration for Kreuzspiel (1951) by Karlheinz Stockhausen.

As he was growing up, he was trained as a classical pianist. In 1950, Paik and his family had to flee from their home in Korea, during the Korean War. His family first fled to Hong Kong, but later moved to Japan, for reasons unknown. Six years later he graduated from the University of Tokyo where he wrote a thesis on the composer Arnold Schoenberg. Paik then moved to Germany to study the history of music at Munich University. While studying in Germany, Paik met the composers Karlheinz Stockhausen and John Cage and the conceptual artists Joseph Beuys and Wolf Vostell who inspired him to work in the field of electronic art
